Furygan Kalahari Jacket
One Jacket. Every Climate. Real Adventure Starts Here.
Adventure riding asks more from riding gear than almost any other discipline in motorcycling. A jacket has to perform through changing temperatures, unexpected storms, slow technical trails, long highway transfers, and hours spent off the motorcycle exploring towns or walking to dinner. It has to protect, ventilate, remain waterproof, and disappear from your mind while you’re riding.
That is exactly the challenge Furygan set out to solve with the Kalahari Jacket.
Rather than building another modular jacket with multiple removable liners, Furygan took a different approach. Developed by the company’s MotionLAB research division, the Kalahari is built around a laminated three-layer construction combined with an advanced ventilation system and premium D3O® protection. The objective is simple: create a jacket capable of handling almost every riding condition without forcing the rider to stop and constantly reconfigure layers.
After spending nearly a week riding through Spain and Portugal, experiencing everything from dry summer heat to hours of continuous rain, we finally had the opportunity to see whether that philosophy works outside laboratory testing. It does.
A Different Philosophy
Many premium adventure jackets still rely on removable waterproof liners and thermal layers to adapt to changing weather. While this approach certainly works, it also means carrying extra layers, stopping to install or remove them, and eventually finding somewhere to store them once temperatures change again.
The Kalahari follows a more modern concept. Its waterproof protection is permanently integrated into the outer shell through Furygan’s DRYCORE Pro laminated membrane. Instead of allowing the outer fabric to become saturated before a waterproof liner stops the water, the laminate prevents moisture from penetrating the shell in the first place.
The result is immediately noticeable. After riding through several hours of heavy rain, the jacket never developed the heavy, soaked feeling common in traditional adventure garments. Water simply remained on the surface, and once the ride was over, the jacket dried remarkably quickly, making it ready for the next day’s ride without feeling damp or uncomfortable.
The DRYCORE Pro membrane offers 20,000 mm waterproofing and 10,000 g/m²/24h breathability, figures that place it comfortably among today’s premium adventure equipment.
Just as importantly, Furygan has achieved this while using a 100% recycled outer fabric with a PFC-free water-repellent treatment, demonstrating that environmental considerations no longer require sacrificing technical performance.
Built for Protection Without Sacrificing Comfort
Adventure riders often spend entire days wearing their jackets. Protection is critical, but so is reducing fatigue. The Kalahari arrives CE certified to AA standards and comes equipped with Furygan’s newest D3O® Specter Level 2 shoulder and elbow protectors.
These protectors represent one of the latest developments from the collaboration between Furygan MotionLAB and D3O. They’re thinner, lighter, and considerably more flexible than previous generations while maintaining full CE Level 2 impact certification.
During our trip, one characteristic became obvious very quickly: you simply stop noticing the armor. Unlike older protectors that constantly remind you they’re there, the Specter inserts conform naturally to body movement. Hours in the saddle never produced pressure points or restricted arm movement, something especially appreciated during technical mountain roads where body positioning changes continuously.
The jacket also includes dedicated pockets for an optional D3O back protector and chest protection, allowing riders to configure the level of protection according to their riding style.
Additional safety features include reflective inserts for improved nighttime visibility and Furygan’s proprietary Skin Protect reinforcement system, designed to strengthen impact-prone areas while maintaining flexibility.
Ventilation That Actually Works
Perhaps the biggest surprise during our test was the ventilation system. Many manufacturers advertise numerous vents, yet very few create meaningful airflow once the motorcycle is moving.
The Kalahari’s AFS Max (Air Flow System Max) feels genuinely engineered rather than simply added. Air enters through multiple adjustable intake points on the sleeves, chest and upper body before exiting through large rear exhaust vents, creating continuous circulation across the torso.
The real highlight, however, is Furygan’s Summer Flap. Instead of relying exclusively on small zippered openings, the main zipper can be configured in two different positions. One closes the jacket normally, while the second reveals a large vertical 3D mesh panel running almost the full height of the chest. This creates a significant volume of airflow without compromising riding stability or comfort.
During warm riding conditions across central Spain, this system became one of the jacket’s most appreciated features.
Long Days Become Easy
Comfort often comes from details rather than headline specifications. The Kalahari includes numerous adjustment points that allow riders to tailor the fit without creating pressure spots. The waist adjustment system, known as DW-Fit, accommodates different body shapes while maintaining freedom of movement. Stretch-friendly ergonomics give the jacket a relaxed adventure fit rather than an aggressive sportbike posture.
One detail we particularly appreciated was the collar. Anyone who has owned several adventure jackets knows that collars can become irritating after hours of riding, especially when repeatedly turning your head while navigating gravel roads or mountain passes. The neoprene inserts around the neck eliminate that issue. The collar remains comfortable throughout the day and never creates unwanted friction against the skin.
Storage is equally well executed. The jacket offers eight pockets, including seven external storage compartments and a fully waterproof internal pocket designed to protect phones, documents, or electronics during prolonged rain. Everything is positioned where it can actually be reached while wearing gloves.
Real Adventure Means Real Weather
Our route through Spain and Portugal delivered exactly the type of conditions adventure riders eventually encounter: warm afternoons, cool mountain mornings, several days of steady rain, highway transfers, twisting secondary roads, and walking through historic towns after parking the motorcycles.
The Kalahari adapted to every one of those scenarios without requiring constant adjustments. The laminated construction kept the rain outside. The ventilation system handled warmer temperatures effectively. The lightweight interior prevented overheating. And perhaps most importantly, the jacket never became something we thought about while riding.
That may sound like a small compliment. It isn’t. The best adventure gear disappears. It simply allows you to focus on the road.
Built for the Long Journey
Furygan has built something considerably more valuable: a highly technical adventure jacket capable of handling almost every riding scenario most adventure motorcyclists will realistically experience. By combining advanced laminated construction, excellent ventilation, premium D3O protection, environmentally responsible materials and outstanding real-world comfort, the Kalahari successfully bridges the gap between touring equipment and serious adventure apparel.
The Furygan Kalahari is impressive because all the systems work together. Protection never compromises comfort. Ventilation never compromises waterproofing. Technical performance never sacrifices day-long usability.
After nearly a week of riding across changing climates and unpredictable weather, one conclusion became obvious. The Kalahari is exactly what a modern adventure jacket should be: protective, adaptable, comfortable, and always ready for wherever the next road leads.
