Alpinestars SX-1 PLASMA Knee Protector

Freedom of Movement Meets Real-World Impact Protection

Knee protection is often something riders only notice when it fails or gets in the way. The SX-1 PLASMA Knee Protector solves both problems by combining modern materials, controlled articulation, and a lightweight structure designed for aggressive off-road and dual-sport riding. As part of a modern, modular protection system, it prioritizes mobility and airflow without sacrificing certified impact resistance.

Bio-Based Innovation: Nucleon PLASMA

At the core of the protector is the Nucleon PLASMA knee insert, made from a USDA-certified bio-based viscoelastic material. This compound is pliable in all directions, allowing it to mold closely to the knee while riding, yet it stiffens instantly on impact to dissipate energy effectively. Supporting this is a semi-rigid dual-density frame that eliminates pressure points where the protector meets the boots or thighs, a critical feature for long days in the saddle.

Natural Motion and Integration

Movement is managed through Alpinestars’ Dual Gear System (DGS), which uses interlocking gear profiles to follow the knee’s natural motion. This keeps the protector correctly positioned whether standing on the pegs or sitting, which is vital on technical terrain where body positioning changes constantly.

During our Northern California BDR field test, the SX-1 PLASMA integrated seamlessly with the rest of the gear. Worn under the Hyde XT Drystar® XF Pants and paired with Tech 7 boots, they fit comfortably without creating restrictive pressure points, even during 10-hour riding days.

Field Tested: A Ride-Saving Impact

The true value of this protection became clear on a gravel section of the route. When the front wheel of a heavy KTM 1290 Super Adventure R struck a loose rock, the bike slid sideways, and the rider’s knee was the first point of impact. The SX-1 PLASMA took the full force of the hit.

While the outer patella shell showed significant scratches after the fall, the rider’s knee remained completely unharmed. Without this level of protection, a strike of that magnitude would likely have ended the seven-day journey right there.

The Bottom Line

Certified to EN 1621-1:2012 Level 1, the Alpinestars SX-1 PLASMA is ideal for riders who want more security than a soft sleeve but more freedom than a full knee brace. Its slim, ergonomic profile allows it to fit easily under riding pants, delivering excellent comfort combined with the serious protection needed when tackling demanding backcountry routes far from help.
