Pol Tarrés Dominates in Morocco Desert Challenge with a Commanding Lead After Stage Two
In a remarkable display of skill and endurance, Pol Tarrés has secured a commanding lead in the 2024 Morocco Desert Challenge, clinching victory in the grueling second stage for the Yamaha Ténéré Rally team. The stage, known for its challenging terrain and length, solidified Tarrés’s position at the forefront of this year’s rally.
The second stage spanned a daunting 363 kilometers from Plage Blanche to Tadachacht/Assa, featuring the rally’s longest special section. Competitors were tested right from the start with a 25-kilometer sprint along the beach, where Tarrés, fresh off his stage one win, took an early lead. The course then transitioned into a challenging mix of canyon trails and dunes, surrounded by mountain cliffs, requiring precise navigation through a variety of terrains including rocky paths and sandy tracks.
Having started the day with a ten-minute advantage, Tarrés displayed exceptional navigational prowess and determination. He completed the stage nearly 20 minutes ahead of his nearest rival, extending his overall lead to an impressive 36 minutes and 52 seconds after just two stages. His performance is a testament to both his skill as a former hard enduro ace and the capabilities of the Yamaha Ténéré World Rally bike, which is equipped with the advanced three-stage GYTR kit.
Reflecting on the stage, Tarrés shared his thoughts, “Today was a good day, although the beginning was tough with tight and rocky sections where I couldn’t push as hard. But post-refueling, we picked up the pace, and the navigation was spot-on. We’re gaining confidence, and the bike’s performance is stellar.”
Marc Bourgeois, team manager, praised Tarrés’s efforts, noting the complexities of leading the pack. “Pol faced a myriad of navigational challenges today, and his ability to maintain focus and confidence was crucial. It’s fantastic to see our team performing so well against the prototype 450cc machines, proving the potential of the Adventure class.”
Looking ahead, the Morocco Desert Challenge continues to present formidable challenges, with a 361-kilometer leg from Tadachacht/Assa to Tissint on the horizon. As Tarrés and the Yamaha Ténéré Rally team prepare for the next stage, they hold a substantial lead but remain aware of the long journey still ahead.
This year’s Morocco Desert Challenge serves as both a rigorous examination of endurance and technical skills and a demonstration of strategic navigation and team synergy. With Tarrés at the helm, the Yamaha team is a strong contender for the title, promising more thrilling action in the days to come.
