Furygan Chattan D3O

Adventure boots traditionally ask riders to accept a compromise. The greater the protection and structural support, the more rigid and cumbersome the boot can become, particularly once the motorcycle is parked and the journey continues on foot. With the Chattan D3O, Furygan approaches that equation from a noticeably different direction, combining impact protection, waterproof construction and a Michelin-developed sole with an unusually flexible chassis designed to remain comfortable beyond the motorcycle.

We put the Chattan D3O through a six-day motorcycle journey across Spain and Portugal, including several days of rain and one particularly demanding stage from Porto to Salamanca spent almost entirely under heavy precipitation. That experience revealed a boot with a very distinct personality: softer and more flexible than many conventional adventure boots, exceptionally easy to walk in, and impressively capable when conditions turned wet.

A Different Kind of Adventure Boot

The first thing immediately noticeable about the Chattan D3O is its flexibility.

Compared with the rigid construction normally associated with adventure footwear, the Furygan feels remarkably supple from the first moment it is worn. There is very little sense of having to “break in” a heavily structured motorcycle boot. Instead, movement feels natural almost immediately.

That characteristic becomes especially relevant during travel.

Adventure riding rarely consists exclusively of sitting on a motorcycle. Riders stop for fuel, explore towns, walk through hotels, visit restaurants, take photographs, and often spend considerable time away from the bike while still wearing their riding equipment. In that environment, the Chattan D3O makes a strong case for itself.

During our test, walking in the boots felt significantly easier than with more rigid adventure footwear. Their movement is closer to that of substantial outdoor footwear than a traditional hard-shell riding boot, allowing the rider to transition naturally between riding and walking without immediately wanting to change shoes.

For long-distance touring, that versatility can become one of the Chattan’s most valuable qualities.

D3O Protection With Freedom of Movement

That flexibility does not mean Furygan has ignored impact protection.

The Chattan D3O incorporates D3O protection around the malleolus. D3O is engineered to remain soft and flexible during normal movement while reacting to impact by increasing resistance and absorbing kinetic energy. It is a technology particularly well suited to the concept Furygan is pursuing here: allowing the rider to retain mobility without relying exclusively on a highly rigid structure.

The sensation is therefore different from wearing a heavily reinforced off-road boot. Riders accustomed to extremely stiff adventure or enduro footwear will immediately notice greater freedom around the ankle.

This distinction is important to understanding the Chattan. Furygan design is oriented toward the adventure traveler who spends long hours on the motorcycle but also expects to remain mobile and comfortable when the engine is switched off.

High-tenacity polyester, polyurethane and rubber are used throughout the construction, creating a technical outer structure designed for the repeated abrasion and exposure associated with travel.

Michelin Grip Underfoot

One of the more interesting components of the Chattan D3O is underneath the boot.

Furygan partnered with Michelin for the sole, producing the Michelin X Furygan outsole. The objective is straightforward: provide the durability and grip required on a motorcycle while remaining practical when walking.

This is particularly relevant for adventure riding, where the rider may encounter wet pavement, loose surfaces, fuel stations, gravel, mud, or uneven terrain during the same journey.

The sole also helps the Chattan feel less restrictive when walking. Combined with the flexible upper construction, it contributes to a boot that feels considerably more natural off the bike than traditional rigid adventure footwear.

A reinforced gear-shift area protects the boot from repeated contact with the shift lever. At the same time, the removable insole adds another practical element for riders using the boots over extended trips.

A Simplified Adjustment System

Furygan uses a micrometric fastening system rather than the multiple independent buckles commonly found on traditional adventure and off-road boots.

The philosophy is simplicity: the rider can put the boot on quickly, adjust tension, and release it without working through several separate closures. A rear pull tab also helps when putting the boot on, while the quick-release mechanism sits at the back and is protected between two raised sections designed to shield the adjustment knob from accidental impacts.

The system reinforces the Chattan’s touring-oriented character. It is quick and uncomplicated, although correct sizing becomes particularly important because the boot relies on a more unified adjustment system rather than several independently tensioned zones.

One of our test pairs was slightly larger than ideal for the rider, while the second tester used the correct size. The experience reinforced a simple recommendation: getting the correct fit is especially important with this design, as it lets the flexible chassis and fastening system work as intended.

The Real Test: Hours of Heavy Rain

The most convincing part of our Chattan D3O test came from something no laboratory specification can fully reproduce: several consecutive days of motorcycle travel in poor weather.

Our six-day route through Spain and Portugal included rain on approximately half of the journey. Two of those days involved relatively moderate exposure, but the ride from Porto to Salamanca presented far more serious conditions.

Rain accompanied us for virtually the entire stage.

Conditions became sufficiently demanding that secondary roads were eventually abandoned in favor of the highway, turning the journey into a prolonged real-world test of the Chattan’s waterproof membrane.

The result was impressive.

After spending hours riding through persistent rain, the boots kept the riders’ feet remarkably dry. Only a very small amount of moisture was noticed around one tester’s toes after the prolonged exposure.

Considering the duration and intensity of the rainfall, waterproof performance became one of the strongest aspects of the entire test.

Furygan equips the Chattan D3O with a waterproof and breathable membrane, and during this trip that specification proved to be considerably more than a line on a technical sheet.

For an adventure rider, this matters enormously. Waterproofing may seem like a secondary feature when choosing equipment in a showroom. Still, after hours riding through rain, the difference between effective and ineffective footwear can determine the comfort of the entire day.

The Chattan passed that test convincingly.

Built for the Journey Beyond the Motorcycle

More rigid adventure boots exist on the market, and lighter touring footwear does too. The Chattan sits deliberately between those categories.

Its D3O protection, high-tenacity construction, waterproof membrane, and Michelin sole provide the technical foundation expected from motorcycle equipment. At the same time, its unusually flexible structure gives it a level of walking comfort uncommon among substantial adventure boots.

That balance becomes particularly relevant for riders whose journeys involve more than simply covering kilometers.

On a multi-day motorcycle trip, the boots may remain on from breakfast until dinner. They have to work while standing on the motorcycle, stopping at fuel stations, checking into hotels, walking through historic towns and enduring hours of changing weather.

During our journey through Portugal and Spain, this was exactly the environment in which the Chattan D3O made the most sense.

They were easy to live with, exceptionally flexible and comfortable off the motorcycle, and when the weather deteriorated dramatically, they demonstrated excellent waterproofing.
