Alpinestars Tech-Air Off-Road Airbag System

Active Protection Where the Trail Turns Unpredictable

For several days in Oregon, the Alpinestars Tech-Air Off-Road Airbag System became part of the morning routine. Put it on, close it correctly, check the system, add the compatible outer layer, and start the day.

That outer layer matters. We used the system with Alpinestars riding gear designed to work with airbag protection, with enough structure and expansion room to allow the Tech-Air system to deploy properly. For riders wondering what happens when an airbag vest inflates under a jacket, that compatibility is an important part of the answer.

The vest was not sitting fully exposed to the trail. It worked under compatible outer riding gear, moving with us through gravel roads, ranch tracks, cattle guards, and wet stretches where the route kept changing under the tires. After hours in the saddle, the dust from the roads, body heat, and sweat were part of every day.

The system is built for off-road, rally, enduro, and adventure use, with dedicated riding modes for Enduro, Rally, and Street. It brings active airbag protection to the upper body, covering the chest, back, shoulders, collarbones, and neck. Alpinestars states an average inflation time of 52 milliseconds, depending on airbag size, and the system uses dual gas inflators that allow two deployments before recharge.

Those numbers are easy to read on a product sheet. They feel different when the front wheel drops into a rut.

The Tech-Air Off-Road feels substantial when it first goes on. That presence comes from the airbag structure, rigid protection, electronics, and inflators integrated into the vest. The passive protection includes certified armor in key impact areas, and the electronic control unit is housed inside the back protector. It is a serious piece of safety equipment, and the body understands that immediately.

Once the day begins, the sensation settles. The vest stays close, the compatible jacket works around it, and the rider adapts to the extra structure around the torso. During long sections standing on the pegs, slow rocky terrain, and faster gravel roads, the system remained comfortable enough to keep wearing without becoming the focus of the ride. It has weight and volume, but both feel justified by its purpose.

Battery life also fit the rhythm of the trip. Alpinestars lists up to 30 hours of runtime, with USB-C charging that reaches a full charge in about four hours. For a multi-day ride, that made the system easy to include in the same routine as helmet, goggles, hydration, and navigation. Charge it, check it, ride with it.

The Ultimate Real-World Test

The real test came in a deep mud section. A rut grabbed the front wheel, the bike stopped violently, and Pablo was thrown forward. There was no time to think, correct, or prepare for impact. The Tech-Air system reacted before the body hit the ground. The airbag deployed, wrapped the upper body, and changed the outcome of the fall. What could have ended as a hard impact became a controlled landing. The airbag deflated after a short time, and Pablo stood up without injury.

That moment changed the way we looked at the vest. Before the fall, it was a technical product with a strong safety promise. After the fall, it became part of the story. The activation felt fast, clean, and precise. There was no confusion, no hesitation, and no sense that the system had reacted late. It did exactly what it was designed to do when the rider had no margin left.

Living with Electronic Armor

After the ride, maintenance became part of the experience. The Tech-Air Off-Road is not a piece of gear to throw into a washing machine. It carries electronics, airbag elements, rigid protectors, and gas inflators, so it asks for patience. Once we were back from Oregon, we carefully disassembled the vest and washed the outer structure by hand in a sink with water and mild soap. After long days of heat, dust, and sweat, being able to clean it properly and prepare it for the next ride made the system easier to live with.

The Alpinestars Tech-Air Off-Road Airbag System is built for riders who understand that protection is part of the ride. It takes space. It adds weight. It demands care. It also delivered when the ride turned unpredictable. Some products prove their value slowly. This one did it in a single fall.
