Metzeler KAROO 4
The 50/50 tire category presents a significant engineering challenge: a tire must perform on high-speed asphalt and in unpredictable off-road terrain. Metzeler’s KAROO 4, the successor to the KAROO 3, is aimed directly at this challenge, armed with patented technologies designed to deliver in both environments. We decided to find out if the tech translated to the trail.
We fitted a set of KAROO 4s to our BMW R 1300 GS and Adventure Trophy test bikes and pointed them at Austria for a 2,000-mile thrashing. The route included high-speed autobahns, slick cobblestones, cold Alpine passes, and a final trial by fire. The mud, gravel, and chaos of the Red Bull Erzbergrodeo.
Our test began with a baptism of cold rain on the autobahn. At highway speeds, with full panniers, the KAROO 4s were planted. This stability comes from Metzeler’s INTERACT technology, a steel belt with variable-tension zones. It’s designed to keep the tire rigid and stable in the center for high-speed droning while allowing the sides to flex for a larger contact patch at lean. Paired with the front tire’s new, hard-rubber compound—formulated to work across a huge temperature range, the tires gave us immediate confidence on cold, wet pavement.
This stability held as we transitioned to the mountains, handling misty switchbacks and rain-slicked cobblestones without drama. The on-road manners are exceptional for a tire with such an aggressive tread. This is due in part to DYMATEC, a system of variable groove wall angles engineered to promote even wear and maintain the tire’s profile.
But the real test was Erzberg. The “Iron Giant” is a massive open-pit mine, and its signature terrain is deep, unpredictable, and notoriously slick mud. With traction control set to Enduro, we plunged in.
This is where the KAROO 4s’ design showed its strength. The bike tracked straight, the tires dug in, and the tread cleared itself effectively. This is Metzeler’s patented DETRATEC design at work. The tread blocks are shaped like “scoops” that actively grab and compress the ground. As the wheel spins, this design collects and then aggressively ejects mud, a critical property for maintaining traction. We found ourselves tackling climbs and ruts with confidence.
That we could ride this hard off-road after hundreds of miles of high-speed highway is a testament to the bi-compound rear tire. The center strip is a 100% carbon-black compound, built for durability and to resist the abrasion and cuts from exactly this kind of terrain.
The Metzeler KAROO 4 delivers on both sides of the 50/50 equation. It provides serious off-road bite while retaining a high degree of on-road stability and wet-grip confidence.
This is a tire for the North American ADV rider. It’s for the rider tackling a BDR, who has to drone 400 miles of Interstate to get to the starting line. It’s for the GS, Ténéré, or Africa Twin owner who needs one set of rubber to handle PNW logging roads, Utah slickrock, and the rainy commute back home.
After 2,000 miles of abuse, the KAROO 4s proved they are a viable solution for true multi-terrain adventure. They provide the confidence to push a 550-pound adventure bike through demanding terrain.
