Jorge Lorenzo’s Father Recounts a Pivotal Moment in His Son’s Early Racing Career
In a recent appearance on journalist Nico Abad’s YouTube channel, Chicho Lorenzo, a renowned motorcycle racing coach and the father of famed racer Jorge Lorenzo, shared a poignant story about his son’s early days in the sport. His narration powerfully underscores Jorge’s steadfast resilience and dedication, shining through even in challenging times.
Chicho Lorenzo vividly described an incident that occurred just months before Jorge’s debut in the MotoGP World Championship. At the time, Jorge was only 14 years old and was participating in the IRTA (International Road-Racing Teams Association) training sessions at the Montmeló circuit. It was during these sessions that a significant and potentially career-altering accident took place.
“During the final lap of the day’s training, everything came to a halt. Riders began to return, and an ambulance rushed onto the track,” Chicho recalled. His apprehension grew as he realized his son was not among the returning riders. His fears were confirmed when he learned that Jorge had been involved in an accident and was being taken to the medical center.
Chicho shared the harrowing details of the accident, which occurred due to a piece of plastic on the track, a remnant from another rider’s earlier fall. Jorge Lorenzo suffered severe injuries, including a broken wrist and collarbone. “The accident wasn’t his fault. It happened in turn three, a fast and long curve,” Chicho lamented.
As he waited anxiously, Chicho watched the ambulance arrive with his son convulsing from the impact. He described this moment as one of the worst in his life. When Jorge started to regain consciousness, Chicho, overwhelmed by the situation, suggested giving up the dangerous sport. “Giorgio, let’s quit this,” he said.
However, Jorge’s response to this suggestion was a defining moment in his career. Despite being in immense pain and barely able to speak, he firmly refused to give up his dream. “He clenched his teeth and just said no. He couldn’t even speak but shook his head, denying my suggestion. He didn’t shed a single tear,” Chicho recounted.
This incident, though harrowing, marked a pivotal point in Jorge Lorenzo’s journey to becoming one of the most celebrated figures in motorcycle racing. His unwavering determination in the face of adversity not only shaped his career but also left an indelible mark on the sport’s history.
Jorge Lorenzo’s journey transcends mere athletic success; it embodies perseverance, courage, and an unwavering pursuit of dreams, despite the obstacles faced along the path.
