Alpinestars Hyde XT Drystar® XF Jacket
Lightweight Protection for Technical Adventure
The Hyde XT Drystar® XF Jacket sits squarely in the heavy off-road and dual-sport corner of adventure riding. In an era where modern riders spend more time standing on the pegs and navigating technical terrain, protection can no longer be bulky or restrictive. It must be adaptive, breathable, and able to move naturally with the body—qualities that define the Hyde XT from the first touch.
Built for Variable Conditions
At the heart of the jacket is its single-layer, four-way stretch monolayer shell, laminated with the Drystar® XF (Extra Flow) membrane. This construction is key for the modern adventure rider: instead of allowing the outer fabric to soak up water and become heavy, the membrane blocks moisture outright.
During our seven-day evaluation on the Northern California Backcountry Discovery Route, this adaptability was put to the test. In chilly morning temperatures of 12–15°C (54–59°F), the jacket provided an effective windproof barrier with the vents closed. As the day warmed up to 25–30°C (77–86°F), the Hyde XT remained light and comfortable, never feeling like a heavy, restrictive “exoskeleton.”
Technical Durability and Airflow
Durability hasn’t been sacrificed for mobility. High-wear zones like the shoulders and arms are reinforced with ripstop nylon, providing the toughness needed for off-road abuse. The stretch fabric keeps movement fluid, especially when wrestling a bike through slow, technical sections.
Ventilation is where this jacket truly shines. It features:
- Long direct vents at the front and rear.
- Zippered forearm air scoops.
- A Super-airflow panel behind the main zipper.
On the trail, usually around 11:30 AM as the sun began to heat up the climbs, opening these panels allowed the jacket to dump heat efficiently. Even on the hottest sections, the laminated shell proved its worth—it packs down exceptionally well and isn’t bulky if you need to stow it away.
Integrated Protection System
Inside, the Hyde XT features a detachable armored mesh jacket fitted with CE Level 1 Nucleon Flex Plus armor. This inner layer keeps protection snug against the body, eliminating the awkward “tug-of-war” between armor and shell. It is also Tech-Air® Ready, allowing for seamless airbag integration.
The jacket is designed to fit naturally over a modular setup. During our field test, we paired it with the Bionic Plus V2 Protection Jacket, and the Hyde XT accommodated the extra armor perfectly without sacrificing the rider’s range of motion.
The Bottom Line
Certified to CE Category II standards, the Hyde XT Drystar® XF is a purpose-driven jacket that rewards active riders. It’s not just about highway comfort; it’s about maintaining control, airflow, and confidence when the trail gets demanding and you are miles away from help.
