Alpinestars Bionic Tech V3
We put Alpinestars’ top-tier upper-body protection system to the ultimate, unplanned test: a chest-first slide down a rocky mountain trail.
The Alpinestars Bionic Tech V3 Protection Jacket is a high-performance system providing Level 2 certified impact protection for the upper body. It’s built for demanding off-road and enduro applications where safety and articulation are mandatory.
The foundation of the Bionic Tech V3 is a breathable, stretch mesh base layer. This chassis is engineered for flexibility and moisture management, conforming to the rider’s body for a secure fit while facilitating airflow. Ventilation channels are positioned to dissipate heat during high-intensity riding.
Integrated into this chassis are floating, detachable Level 2 Polyhedron Hybrid Technology chest and back protectors, along with Level 2 Nucleon Flex Pro shoulder and elbow protectors. These components combine rigid and soft elements to ensure impact absorption without compromising mobility.
Both dual-zone chest and back protectors feature a rigid central core surrounded by a soft, flexible perimeter compound, supported by bio-foam padding. On the chest protector, soft-side wings and a bio-foam interface create an adaptive system that molds to the rider’s torso.
The central zone behind the perforated impact grid is fully open, enhancing heat dispersion. Approximately 17% of the protector’s total surface consists of ventilation apertures aligned across both layers, achieving significant breathability.
On first inspection, the Bionic Tech V3 looks complex with its straps and panels. But the system provides a precise fit. Protectors are secured via adjustable shoulder straps and a V-belt running through ventilated rib guards. This design distributes tightening forces, improving stability. A magnetic quick-release buckle on the left shoulder simplifies entry and exit.
Once you figure out how it all comes together and actually put it on, everything just makes sense. The fit feels natural. V-straps on the forearms lock elbow protectors in place, while back panel V-straps allow adaptive adjustment. The rib guards add lateral protection, and the waist strap is detached from the back protector to increase freedom of movement.
The jacket is BNS (Bionic Neck Support) compatible via a removable puck panel, and the floating protectors detach for cleaning. EVA foam padding adds roost defense. The build quality is immediately apparent. Every piece falls right into place, and the more you move around, the more you notice how well each section of protection has been designed.
After a few rides, I felt confident wearing it. Then came the real test. On a rocky mountain trail, a root kicked my front wheel sideways during a climb, sending me sliding chest-first across the stones. It was one of those slow-motion moments.
When I finally stopped, I hadn’t hurt a thing, except my pride. The chest, shoulders, and arm protectors did their job perfectly, absorbing the hit and saving me from a painful outcome. Tested in the most honest way possible, the Bionic Tech V3 proved its worth.
The jacket’s performance in that crash is backed by its certifications. It meets a full slate of Level 2 standards.
- Chest Protector: EN 1621-3:2018 Level 2
- Back Protector: EN 1621-2:2014 Level 2
- Shoulder Protectors: EN 1621-1:2012 Level 2
- Elbow Protectors: EN 1621-1:2012 Level 2
Through the integration of Polyhedron Hybrid Technology, Nucleon Flex Pro components, and an advanced ventilated chassis, the Bionic Tech V3 achieves an optimal balance between mobility, impact absorption, and ventilation. Its modular design and full Level 2 certification make it a technically refined upper-body protection system for riders seeking maximum safety and comfort.
