BMW F 450 GS
The Lightweight Adventure Weapon That Redefines the A2 Class
When BMW Motorrad decides to develop a GS from the ground up, expectations naturally rise. And with the arrival of the BMW F 450 GS, the brand has created a motorcycle that distills the core GS experience into a lighter, more agile, and more approachable package. Designed for riders who demand confidence on any terrain, the F 450 GS bridges the gap between seasoned adventure experts and newcomers who want their first real GS-class machine.
The result is a compact, robust, technology-rich motorcycle that brings the famous “go anywhere, do anything” GS spirit into the competitive 400–500 cc adventure segment. For many riders, this will be the bike that unlocks the world of off-road exploration. For others, it will be a lightweight alternative to big-bore adventure machines without sacrificing capability or comfort.
A New Heart for a New Generation
At the core of the F 450 GS is a completely redesigned 420 cc parallel-twin engine, engineered to deliver smoothness, character, and a distinctive GS sound. Producing 48 hp at 8,750 rpm and 32 lb-ft (43,39 N·m) of torque at 6,750 rpm, it hits the A2 license limit with precision, but numbers alone don’t tell the story.
BMW gave the engine a 135-degree crankpin offset, an uncommon configuration for this class, providing an uneven firing order, richer character, and remarkably low vibration. A counter-rotating balance shaft eliminates harshness, making long days in the saddle more comfortable both on pavement and in the dirt.
BMW’s engineers pushed for versatility: steady, predictable throttle response for technical trails, smooth cruising for touring, and enough punch to power out of corners. Combined with a 13.0:1 compression ratio, modern fuel injection, wet-sump lubrication, and EU5+ compliance, the result is an engine that is clean, efficient, emotionally engaging, and durable enough for serious adventure riding.
The Easy Ride Clutch: A Game-Changer in Hard Terrain
One of the F 450 GS’s stand-out innovations is BMW’s Easy Ride Clutch (ERC), a centrifugal clutch system standard on the GS Trophy variant. Think of it as the fusion of enduro-style auto-clutch behavior with BMW’s refinement.
With ERC, riders can:
- Start moving without touching the clutch lever
- Maneuver at low speed without fear of stalling.
- Focus on throttle control during climbs or tight switchbacks.
- Still use the clutch manually when needed (wheel lifts, slippery descents, technical corrections)
BMW explicitly states that ERC remains engaged during overrun, maintaining full engine braking, a critical detail for off-road riders who rely on predictable traction on steep descents. When paired with Gear Shift Assist Pro, clutchless upshifts and downshifts transform the mid-range GS into a far more dynamic and rider-friendly machine.
A Compact Chassis Built to Perform Everywhere
BMW did not recycle the frame from older models. The tubular steel frame, integrally redesigned, uses the engine as a stressed member to reduce weight and improve stiffness. Combined with compact geometry, 57.7-inch (146.56 cm) wheelbase, 28.1° steering angle, and 4.5-inch (11.43 cm) trail, the bike feels flickable on tight roads and stable at speed.
KYB components handle suspension:
- Front: 43 mm USD fork, 7.1 in (18.03 cm) travel (fully adjustable in the GS Trophy “Sport Suspension”)
- Rear: Hollow-cast aluminum swingarm with a KYB central WAD shock, 7.1 in (18.03 cm) travel
BMW’s WAD (travel-dependent damping) system is derived from off-road racing and is unique in this class. It ramps up compression damping as the shock nears full travel, resisting bottom-outs during aggressive riding.
The Trophy variant includes cross-spoked 19/17-inch (48.26-43.18 cm) wheels, tubeless tires, wider enduro footpegs, and a tough aluminum engine guard, all essential for authentic adventure travel.
Braking is handled by a Brembo 4-piston caliper with a 310 mm disc up front and a 240 mm disc at the rear, both governed by BMW Motorrad ABS Pro for safe braking even while leaned over.
Ergonomics for Hours in the Saddle
Adventure riders will appreciate how thoughtfully BMW shaped the cockpit. Wide aluminum handlebars sit high and close to the rider, while the 3.6-gallon (13.63 L) fuel tank is sculpted to support both seated and standing positions. The rear end is narrow and compact, emphasizing agility without compromising load capacity.
Multiple seat options, standard 33.3 in (84.58 cm), low 32.7 in (83.06 cm), and high Rallye 34.0 in (86.36 cm), ensure the F 450 GS can be adapted to almost any rider height. Adjustable brake and shift levers come standard, and handlebar risers are available as accessories.
BMW also offers a complete line of luggage, windshields, protection parts, and navigation accessories tailored to the bike’s modular design.
Technology That Sets a New Standard in the Segment
The F 450 GS arrives with more electronics than many motorcycles twice its price:
- Rain, Road, Enduro riding modes
- Enduro Pro (Trophy variant) with wheelie control OFF and rear ABS OFF
- ABS Pro, DTC, Dynamic Brake Control, and MSR
- Full LED lighting with GS “X” signature
- 6.5-inch TFT display with BMW Connectivity
- USB-C charging
- Sport Screen (Trophy variant) showing lean angle, DTC activity, and braking power
Navigation is integrated directly into the TFT, and BMW’s ConnectedRide system is available for riders who prefer full map navigation.
